How to Care for Diabetic Feet

If you are diabetic it is very important that you take care of your feet. Diabetic foot care is neccessary to ensure you feet are healthy and to prevent diabetic foot pain or diabetic neuropathy. Caring for diabetic feet does not have to be difficult or overwhelming. But by spending a few minutes caring for your feet each day you can save time, money and pain in the future. Follow these steps to keep your diabetic feet healthy and free from diabetic foot pain!

  • Mirror
  • Lotion
  • Socks
  • Comfortable well fitting shoes
  • Yearly foot exam

Each day you should check your feet to make sure that they are not injured in any way. Examine your feet to make sure that they are free from blisters, cuts, scrapes, or sores. If you are unable to see the bottom of your feet easily you can use a mirror to examine them.

After you examine your feet you should apply lotion at least one time daily to your feet. This will help keep your feet hydrated and prvent them from getting dry and cracking. If you do have dry cracked feet make sure you are applying lotion regularly and using a cracked heel treatment cream on your feet daily.

You should wear socks and comfortable well fitting shoes. Avoid open toed shoes or flip flops as they can make foot injury more likely. If you are going to be walking long distances make sure you are wearing appropriate shoes to avoid getting blisters.

To protect yourself from diabetic neuropathy or diabetic foot pain it is important to have a yearly foot exam done by your doctor. Your doctor will be able to determine how well the nerves in your feet are working and make sure that your feet are healthy.

If you ever have a wound on your foot or have any diabetic foot pain make sure you see your doctor. Don't wait to treat foot wounds. It is better to be safe than sorry.
