  The pain of a sprained ankle can be severe. Ice reduces pain and swelling or over-the-counter pain relievers can diminish the pain as well. Pain is more severe when weight is put on the ankle, but you might experience pain when not putting weight on the injury. There are varying levels of severity in an ankle sprain. In severe ankle sprains, doctors might have to repair a torn ligament.


Difficulty Standing or Walking

  A sprained ankle makes it difficult to put weight on the injured leg. Standing or walking should be limited until the swelling and pain diminish. You don't have to stop all physical activity, according to the Mayo Clinic.



  A sprained ankle might bruise along with swelling. This usually occurs when there is a torn ligament.


Difficulty Moving the Ankle

  Patients with a sprained ankle will be unable to turn the ankle or flex the foot in some cases. Physical therapy after the swelling has diminished, will help to restore function to the ankle. The treatment helps to improve range of motion and flexibility to the healing ankle.
