Causes of Ankle Pain
1. The ankle is a very important joint to the body. It can get injured by simply getting up out of a chair and and planting your foot wrong. One cause of ankle pain is twisting or spraining it. This often occurs when you step on a jagged surface like a rock and the ligaments around the ankle joint get stretched past their given range of motion. The result is pain and swelling that can last up to a few weeks.
2. If you are an athlete or a runner, you are always putting a lot of force on your joints. The ankle is one of the joints that takes the brunt of this force. After this repetitive pounding, the ankle can become weakened and it can develop a condition called bursitis. At joint locations, there are little sacs of fluid that are called bursa. When joints are continually pounded, the bursa sacs can become inflamed and sore. Bursitis soon develops and pain is sure to follow.
3. Being obese already comes with it a host of harmful side effects, such as increased risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But it can also take its toll on the joints as well. The excess weight that the body has to carry puts a lot of extra stress on the ankles, which causes pain and discomfort.
4. Gout is a condition where there is an excess build-up of uric acid in the body. This acid pools up and settles at joint locations like the elbows, knees and ankles. It is caused from a substance called purines and it can be exacerbated by eating foods that contain them, such as red meats, mussels and foods that contain yeast.
5. Perhaps the biggest cause of ankle pain is arthritis. This is a condition where the joint becomes sore, it swells up and there is also redness and warmth around it. Three common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis.
